a huge fire blazing in a garden and called the cops.
A young boy saw the fire, thought the neighbors were having a barbecue
and wanted to join. The curious eight-year-old was passing by with his
mum after school when they noticed the huge fire and a "bad smell" in
the air.
The boy thought the neighbors were having a barbeque and wanted to be
a part of it, not knowing it was the body of 21-year-old Sophie
Lionnet being burned beyond recognition. Another neighbor told how her
son looked over the fence and saw a man sweeping up sticks and putting
them on the fire.
Concerned neighbors called officers to the flat in Southfields on
Wednesday evening. When police arrived at about 6:30p.m., they found a
charred body in the rear garden of the south London home and have
charged a man and woman with murder.
The boy's mum told the Daily Mail: "I was walking past on the way home
from school and we could see flames through the fence posts. My young
son called out, 'If you are having a barbecue, are we allowed to
come?' I told him, 'no, that's not a barbecue, that's a bad smell'."
Though the woman knew the smell was not barbecue, she had no idea it
was a person being burned. She said she thought they were burning
leaves. Another neighbour in the converted Victorian building said he
called his landlord to report a "gassy smell".
The woman whose body was burned was named locally as Miss Lionnet. She
was from Troyes, in north-eastern France, and came to Britain to work
as an 'au pair' more than a year ago, according to reports. She was
described as a "very polite, pleasant girl" who "looked about 13 but
was actually in her early 20s".
Police announced on Friday that Ouissem Medouni, 40, and Sabrina
Kouider, 34, both of Pulborough Road, Southfields, have been charged
with murder.
A spokesman said: "Police were called to a residential address at
Wimbledon Park Road, SW18, at 6.26pm on Wednesday following reports of
a fire and a person deceased. A body was found at the scene. The body
was too badly burned to establish the gender and age.
A post-mortem examination will be held in due course. A 40-year-old
man and a 34-year-old woman were arrested, and both were charged on
Friday with the murder of an unidentified person. They are Ouissem
Medouni, 40, and Sabrina Kouider, 34, both of Pulborough Road, SW18."
Both suspects are due to appear in custody at Wimbledon Magistrates'
Court on Friday.
